Fracture Initiation and Propagation in Porous Media: Seminar With Prof. Yoshioka
Fracture Initiation and Propagation in Porous Media: Seminar With Prof. Yoshioka
Prof. Keita Yoshioka is a professor for Geoenergy Production Engineering in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Montanuniversität Leoben. His presentation will be at 15:00 on Thursday, March 23, 2023. The topic is “Fracture Initiation and Propagation in Porous Media: Variational Phase-Field Model.”
In this presentation, Prof. Yoshioka will briefly go over how conventional fracture mechanics fails to address fracture nucleation and introduce a variational phase-field model which has witnessed the explosive popularity within the mechanics community since its inception in the early 2000's. Part of this success is because of its ability to capture complex fracture behaviors, including nucleation and propagation along complex unknown path in 2 and 3 dimensions without the need for ad-hoc criteria and geometric restrictions on crack path. He will then focus on its applications and necessary adaptations for hydraulic fracturing. Finally, Professor will close his talk with future prospectives and further research topics in this subject.

Well Performance Seminar from Prof. Furui, Waseda University
Well Performance Seminar from Prof. Furui, Waseda University
Abstract
Well inflow performance refers to a well’s ability to pass fluids from the reservoir to the interior of the well. The interface between the interior of the well and the reservoir is referred to as completion, which plays a crucial role in the inflow performance of the well. The well inflow performance is controlled by many completion- and stimulation-related parameters
such as perforation conditions, formation damage, partial completion, inclination, acid penetration, fracture length/conductivity, etc.
In this seminar two field examples will be presented, demonstrating how well performance analysis is used to evaluate overall completion and stimulation designs and execution performance. The first field example discusses the evaluation of frac-pack flow performance for subsea IWS wells in high-permeability sandstone reservoirs. In this case, a comprehensive well inflow performance analysis from data acquisition, well testing design, and Darcy and Non-Darcy skin factor analysis is conducted to assess completion damage in frac-pack wells and develop empirical correlations to predict well flow performance before and after full clean-up for the frac-pack wells.
The second field example presents a comprehensive study on wormholing to improve the understanding of matrix acidizing in carbonate reservoirs. In this example, acid wormholing in carbonate rock is analyzed through linear core flooding tests, small block tests, and large block tests, as well as field measurements. The study results indicate that a skin value of −4 is
achievable in carbonate reservoirs by matrix acidizing. Also, wormholing efficiency discussed as a scale effect in previous studies are reconfirmed by the small and large block laboratory tests, which corresponds to PVbt on an order of 0.02 to 0.04 under radial flow conditions. An understanding of the possible range of wormhole penetration presented in this work has
allowed operators to improve field acid treatments and reduce the risk of connecting to water.

What is 'Petroculture'? - Triple N Talks
What is 'Petroculture'? - Triple N Talks
This talk with explore the concept of "petroculture", which names the deep and abiding impact of fossil fuels on the character of modern society. Over the past decade, the term has been used increasingly in the humanities and social sciences for two reasons: first, as a way to newly understand socio-historical developments in relationship to energy transitions; and second, to more fully grapple with the cultural and social shifts which will have to accompany changes in energy use. To see ourselves inhabiting petrocultures is to recognize that technological innovations and renewable energies are unlikely to be enough to address global warming. Such changes will have to be accompanied by changes to the social, cultural, and political norms and expectations which were developed in conjunction with the energy riches of the past century-and-a-half — a process which is likely to prove more challenging and disruptive than currently imagined.
About the presenter:
Imre Szeman is University Researcher at the Chair of Environmental Communication at the University of Waterloo and the Climate Critic for the Green Party of Canada. He is co-founder of the Petrocultures Research Group, which explores the socio-cultural dimensions of energy use and its implications for energy transition and climate change, and the leader of After Oil, a collective which has produced After Oil (West Virginia University Press, 2016)and Solarities: Seeking Energy Justice (University of Minnesota Press, 2022). He is author (most recently) of On Petrocultures: Globalization, Culture, and Energy (WVUP, 2019) and is working on The Futureof the Sun, a book detailing corporate and state control of the transition to renewables.

For this reason we want to invite you to his INAUGURAL LECTURE:
Date: Wednesday, 30.11.2022
Time: 5 p.m.
Place: Lecture Room, ground floor, DPE Building, Parkstraße 27
Title: Fracture Initiation and Propagation in Porous Media: Variational Phase-Field Model
Abstract:
Fracturing is a well stimulation technique applied in hydrocarbon or geothermal energy production. While fractures are deliberately created in such geo-energy applications, they are something to avoid or to be controlled in underground energy and CO2 storage or nuclear waste disposal. This shift in focus prompts us to study not only propagation but also nucleation of fractures. And subsequently we need simulation capabilities for both propagation and nucleation.
In this lecture, Prof.
He will then focus on its applications to desiccation fracturing in porous material, mechanical joints in geological formations, and hydraulic fracturing.
Finally, I will close my talk with future prospectives and further research topics in this subject.
Wer are looking forward to your coming and remain with Glückauf!

Main Theme of the Congress’ Plenary Session
Due to the trends, the role of the Arctic in the oil and gas industry of our time cannot be overestimated. This region can bring the largest and most promising oil and gas fields to the world. Despite this, scientists face problems developing in the Arctic due to the harsh climate and insufficiently developed technologies. Recently, this territory has also acquired one more importance for the world economy — transport. The Northern Sea Route along the coast of the Arctic seas of Russia is almost 2 times shorter than other routes from Europe to the Far East. Thus, all of the above call for the development and application of innovative digital technologies in the oil and gas industry, especially in the Arctic, including the robotization of this region. Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the "Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation", ensuring national security for the period up to 2035.

Presentation: Oil-well cements – a journey from manufacturing and standards to chemical resistance
Presentation: Oil-well cements – a journey from manufacturing and standards to chemical resistance
All students interested in the topic are welcome to take part in this presentation. This is an opportunity to learn and ask questions about cement manufacturing, the different characteristics of oil-well cement, grades, alternatives to cement, carbon emission, other blends that Dyckerhoff manufactures, etc.
Abstract:
Oil-well cements differ from ordinary construction cements, in terms of application and requirements and therefore, applicable standards and extent of quality control during manufacturing. Although cementing is commonly considered as a “commodity” segment during drilling and completing a well, its importance for zonal isolation is unquestionable. Within this, the oil-well cement itself plays a vital role. As for other oil-field materials, after Macondo, the views and requirements on quality oil-well cements seemed to have changed. Properly-developed standards play an essential role in defining basic requirements. On top of this, the huge complexity of the challenging purpose and application down-hole set additional requirements to manufacturers as well as to the users. So, for instance, consistency of reactivity and compatibility with common and enhanced chemicals define an additional level of field requirements for oil-well cements, which can hardly be covered by standards only. This presentation provides basics but also important details about oil-well cement production, quality control and chemistry. The latter being complemented by information about sulfate and CO2 resistance. Apart from standardized “basic cement classes” G and H, which globally dominate the well-cementing industry, other standardized cement classes and future product and standardization trends, e.g. CO2 footprint-reduced composite cements, are discussed as well.
Dr. Heiko Plack CV:
Dr. Heiko Plack holds a Master of Engineering in Mining and a PhD in Petroleum Engineering. He joined Dyckerhoff - one of the world’s biggest well-cement producers - in 1994 as Head of Development Laboratory and Technical Consultant to Well Cements. Since 2003, he has been responsible for global oil-well cement sales of the Dyckerhoff Group. Including his PhD phase, he has been involved in the field of well cements for almost 30 years. The greatest part of this is that he has been an active member and workgroup chairman of “API SC 10, Subcommittee on Well Cements” and ISO Subcommittee 3 “Drilling and completion fluids, and well cements” during all these decades. In 2011, he joined the Management Team of Dyckerhoff’s Central Europe East Division, to coordinate the sales activities for all cement products sold in Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Czech Republic.

Presentation: Geostatistical Tools for Seismic Reservoir Characterization
Presentation: Geostatistical Tools for Seismic Reservoir Characterization
The Chair of Geology and Economic Geology of the Department Applied Geosciences and Geophysics invites students to the presentation "Geostatistical tools for seismic reservoir characterization'' that will be held by Dr. Leonardo Azevedo from the Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisboa, Portugal).
Abstract: Geostatistics has been used as a central modelling technique for hydrocarbon reservoir characterization. This family of tools is of great interest mainly due to its potential in incorporating data with different nature and resolution. Within this framework iterative geostatistical seismic inversion methodologies do play a central role in reservoir modelling and characterization being efficient and reliable tools to integrate simultaneously seismic reflection and well-log data and infer detailed subsurface petro-elastic models along with its intrinsic spatial uncertainty. While the importance of these techniques is growing within the geoscience community there is still a considerably lack of understanding of its applicability limitations. This talk is a guide through the most common geostatistical tools used within this scope and the available geostatistical seismic inversion methodologies from the acoustic into the petro-elastic domain. All the inversion approaches shown are supported by real case applications and compared in order to point out the pros and cons of each technique.

3rd Reservoir Engineering - DPE Seminar
Upscaling Wettability – From Molecular Interactions to Relative Permeability
The Reservoir Engineering - DPE Seminar is a lunch meeting where academic and scientific staff, as well as students from DPE, have the opportunity to discuss recent research and publications related to Reservoir Engineering.
The presentation “UPSCALING WETTABILITY – FROM MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS TO RELATIVE PERMEABILITY” will be held by Maja Rücker, PhD candidate, from Imperial College, London, United Kingdom.
Abstract: Wettability is known to impact both capillary pressure- and relative permeability-saturation functions. To determine these relationships steady and unsteady state flow experiments or Amott spontaneous imbibition tests may be conducted. As these tests are time-consuming and costly, the development of computational tools to simulate experiments and generate realistic relative permeability curves is crucial.
To upscale wettability, that is a molecular scale property to the core scale, different aspects need to be considered: surface roughness at sub-pore scale facilitates fluid film formation, which may impact the flow regimes observed at the pore scale. Results obtained from spontaneous imbibition and flow experiments at core scale are compared with pore-scale fast μCT data, illustrating the impact of sub-pore scale roughness on the pore-scale flow regime.
The mixed-wet surface of the rock leads to a ganglion dynamics flow regime with larger and more frequent oil-filling events than known from waterwet systems. These findings indicate that a simple extrapolation of the flow regime from water-wet conditions appears insufficient to capture the dynamics and connectivity of the oil phase.

SPE Workshop: Data Enabled Operational Excellence
SPE Workshop: Data Enabled Operational Excellence - The Value of Information in Oilfield Operations
Operational Excellence is a long-term goal to introduce sustainable changes in culture and operations. Digital Oilfield and Integrated Operations have been started as strategies 15 years ago, and are still not implemented mainstream.
- Will current low oil prices hinder all these long-term goals while quarterly reports are key today?
- How will data help to get culture change and strategy implemented in a sustainable way?
This workshop wants to put new ideas and related lessons learned on the table to be discussed. The industry is still struggling with proper field data acquisition, integration and quality control – after all these years.
Progress in information technologies has led to more robust and effective solutions for production operations. Real-time monitoring devices are becoming the norm, providing large volumes of data. Nevertheless, many operators still struggle to retrieve value out of these investments. Properly planned data acquisition, data integration, preparation, and enrichment is still an issue due to migrating data to actionable information.
